Yooka Laylee is finally here on the Switch. I purposely waited on this version of the game to purchase the game, but I have some complaints to make. These are the sort of articles I hate to write, but I feel like they need to written.
Last week, the game I have been waiting for finally released, but there was a problem -
The game was $39.99, digital only.
Yooka Laylee is currently $19.99 on both Steam, and PSN as of writing this article. I could easily find this game physically for the other major consoles at this price. Somehow though, Playtonic thinks this is an acceptable price for a digital only game. I would happily pay the $19.99 for the game on the eShop, or $39.99 for a physical copy, but certainly not full price (More that full for some games of similar scale) for a eShop only release. One of the biggest problems I have with the Switch release is this price. This is an unjustified cost.
The additional sales from being on the Switch would more than cover the cost of the porting process. Other indie developers have called it the most profitable platform to sell it on! I find it ridiculous that they expect the original retail cost for a 7 month old game, and not even give us a physical copy or change the game. (Other than gameplay and bug fixes.)
Playtonic is a company formed by veterans of the industry, but they are handling their Kickstarter, their releases, and the fans like a newly formed Indie team. That being said, I would happily pay $19.99 for the game on the eShop, or the $39,99 they expect for the game for a physical copy. It is sad too, I really enjoyed Yooka Laylee despite what others said about it. I would love to have it to play on the go.
